Reversal of tissue position after cell sorting

Abstract

In most tissue combinations which have been studied, cell sorting results in highly reproducible tissue patterns. In a given combination of two cell types, one cell type always occupies the perimeter of the aggregate and the other always occupies the interior. In some tissue combinations, however, position reversals have been observed to occur. The present study deals with position reversals in chick embryo heart-pigmented retinal epithelium and heart-limb bud mesenchyme tissue combinations. Evidence is presented which implies that this reversal of tissue position results from changes in cellular adhesiveness during cell culture.
