Abstract

The use of robotic systems for the inspection of gas distribution systems is discussed. Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in Pittsburgh has developed a prototype robotic system for the internal visual inspection of gas distribution mains. The system consists of a long range untethered, modular, remotely controllable, self-powered inspection robot for the inspection of 6 and 8 inch natural gas distribution systems. The system is able to provide video footage of the gas pipes even on sharp bends and tees allowing much needed information to the maintenance division.
