Abstract

Erosion of syntactic foams had not been studied thus far. Repeated erosion impact approach is used to carry out the erosion tests in the present study. The specimens were subjected to erosion impact at different angles of orientation with respect to angle of incidence of the particles namely 15?, 30°, 45°, 60°and 90°. The weight loss of the syntactic foams was calculated after 5,10 and 20 seconds of erosion. It is observed that the maximum erosion weight loss occurred at 30? impact angle. In terms of the area of the eroded zone, 15° shallow angle shows the maximum value. As far as the maximum depth of erosion, the same 15° angle shows minimum value while about similar levels are rerecorded for 30°, 45° and 60° cases. Three-dimensional profiles of the weight loss are presented for some of the test conditions.
