Abstract

Skills Training in Affective and Interpersonal Regulation (STAIR) Narrative Therapy is an evidence-based 16-session treatment for trauma-exposed indviduals. It is comprised of two modules each of which is organized to address different treatment targets. STAIR focuses on improving day-to-day functioning with specific attention on emotion regulation and social skills. Narrative Therapy addresses PTSD symptoms through the review and reappraisal of trauma memories with continued practice of STAIR skills. The combination of these modules meets two critical goals of trauma recovery, namely resolution of PTSD and other trauma-related symptoms as well as improvement in work, social, and family functioning. Evidence supports the flexible application of the modules with the number and content of sessions adapted to the specific needs of the individual. While the treatment has been most frequently tested as an individual therapy modality, evidence supports the use of STAIR in a group format and a brief STAIR alone program in primary care. The therapy has been successfully delivered to both adults and adolescents and diverse trauma populations including childhood abuse survivors, rape survivors, and military veterans.
