Abstract
The van der Waals mean-field approach to phase separated simple fluids is reviewed, emphasizing one special case. This approach is seen to arise as an approximation to a potential ensemble representation of the classical partition function. A lattice gas reference fluid and discrete Yukawa interaction permit a decomposition of potential space configurations into surface, interacting surface, and single-phase domain components. The last is evaluated for some typical shapes.
