    Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of the career profiles of Italian legislators over the entire sample period 1948-2008. In particular, it documents the extent to which the characteristics of Italian legislators (such as their age, gender, education, occupation, and income prior to entering the Parliament) have changed over time and highlight the major differences between the First and the Second Republic. To provide a term of comparison, it also contrasts the profiles of Italian legislators and their evolution over the postwar period to those of the members of the United States Congress.
