N2 - We construct new string solutions, tachyon-free, and (one-loop) modular invariant by a generalized dimensional reduction procedure, which provides the analog, in string theory, of the Scherk-Schwarz mechanism of supergravity. Gauge symmetry is broken, and the breaking scales are free parameters of the theory.
