Abstract

Recently, we have initiated investigations on the synthesis and characterization of rare earth metal containing polymers. Our primary objectives were (1) to utilize rare earth metal probes to elucidate the structures of ionomers, (2) to study detailed fluorescence properties of rare earth metal chelating synthetic polymers and to explore the possible laser action of the polymers. In this article, we will discuss our preliminary fluorescence results, as well as experimental work on the laser properties of europium and terbium in chelating polymers.
