Abstract

A simple, easy to implement alternative to using optical and thermocouple techniques to plasma temperature measurement in the range 1300-2200 K is proposed. The new diagnostic technique is based on power balance requirement for a copper wire, which is near the melting point, to be in thermal equilibrium with the plasma torch. The method is demonstrated for the measurement of the plasma torch temperature generated by a 60 Hz discharge with gas flowing between two electrodes made of tungsten wires.
