    Abstract

There are very few detailed studies of the museum profession and most tend to be concerned principally with statistics. A very valuable exception is the work undertaken by Paul DiMaggio on directors of American art museums. DiMaggio raised questions about how ‘professionalism’ is perceived and considered this in relation to the profiles of those who held key positions.
