    Abstract

An adequate perspective on our institutions tends to be possible only in retrospect. This article examines media growth trends over the past twenty years and finds the interpretation of them greatly distorted. Contrary to past expectations, mass media are shrinking in size relative to the total economy and the specialized media are becoming increasingly important.
