Abstract

We explore how (supposedly objective) science phenomena (the immune system) emerged as co-constituted with the nation-state and the militarization of bodies in a Grade 8 science lesson in South India. The teacher wove narratives of recent military action in the contested region, Kashmir, with explanations of how antibodies activate in the human body. We illuminate how, at the microgenetic level, Hindutva logics shaped students’ understandings of scientific concepts, and how this entanglement served Hindu nationalism.
