Abstract
Laboratory studies in France of two and three-dimensional models of reinforced earth walls built (or loaded) up to failure have shown that the classical retaining walls limit analysis design methods presently used, or proposed, are inadequate to describe the failure mechanism of models and lead to a large underestimation of the model's ultimate resistance. This paper presents a new design method based on the analysis of the ″observed″ failure mechanism in laboratory models and of measurements of tensile forces in the reinforcements and of stresses within the soil, realized for several years on actual structures. It demonstrates, through the analysis of the experimental results, that the proposed design method leads to a far better estimation of the ultimate resistance of reinforced earth retaining walls and bridge abutments.
