Abstract
Given a vector field defined in a volume enclosed by a boundary, it is possible to predict the total index of point singularities of the vector field within the volume if it satisfies specified conditions on the boundary. This is made precise in a mathematical theorem, and its applications to physical systems, especially nematic liquid crystals, are discussed.
