Abstract

Transfer-function specification techniques play a significant role in handling the direct volume rendering of a diversity of volumetric data sets. A unique tool has been designed to efficiently handle the diversity of data that may be encountered in both medical and scientific domains. The tool, which facilitates feature extraction through transfer-function specification, builds on previous work by unifying existing methods and introducing new techniques for specifications that researchers can use independently or in unison for volume visualization of complex data. Other contributions include an algorithm for range-mapping high-dynamic range (HDR) data, a method for blending transfer functions defined on different histograms, and a technique for specifying transfer functions over time. The system for transfer-function specification also comprises several tools that aim to provide useful insights about underlying data.
