Abstract
A general expression for the ultrasonic attenuation coefficient α (T) in systems undergoing strain-induced cooperative Jahn-Teller transitions has been derived. The theory makes use of the temperature dependent line widths of the crystal field manifolds. These have been calculated assuming the damping comes from aspherical coulomb scattering involving the rare-earth (RE) ion and the conduction electrons. With the theoretical expression for α (T) and the widths we make a comparison with experimental results for the RE intermetallic compound TmZn.
