View from the Archives: Institutional Memory Projects and the Promise and Power of Oral History for Preserving Intangible Cultural Heritage and Knowledge

Abstract

This presentation spotlights opportunities in and of the multidisciplinary field of oral history in the effort to preserve intangible cultural heritage, and the traditions and knowledge unique to communities past and present. Archivist Lauren Kata, an academic librarian for Archives and Special Collections and University Archivist at NYU Abu Dhabi, has specialized in oral history archives for over 20 years. She will discuss her inspirations and experiences with the value of oral history “Memory Projects,” and offer some practical considerations for archivists wishing to ensure oral history archives are preserved and made accessible for current and future users.
