    Abstract

This article reports the volume phase transitions of polyampholyte gels made of positively charged (methacylamidopropyl trimethylammonium chloride: MAPTAC or vinylbenzyl trimethyl ammonium chloride: VBTA) and negatively charged monomers [2-acrylamido)-2-methylpropanesulfonate: AMPS or sodium styrenesulfonic acid: SSS]. The first order volume phase transition was observed in polyampholyte gels as a function of monomer compositions, and solvent qualities. The detailed analysis of the phase diagram of the polyampholytes will allow the quantitative determination of the relationship between microscopic monomer interactions and macroscopic phase behavior.
