    Abstract

Waterfall Bluff rock shelter is a recently excavated archaeological site located in the Lambasi region of eastern Mpondoland (Eastern Cape Province) on the east coast of South Africa. Deposits at the site span Marine Isotope Stage 3 to the Middle Holocene. Detailed descriptions of the excavation sequence, chronology, and archaeological remains have been reported by Fisher et al. (2020), and a detailed palaeobotanical and biochemical study has been described by Esteban et al. (2020). The site preserves rare evidence of coastal occupation and foraging during glacial periods and across glacial–interglacial transitions alongside high-resolution records of palaeoclimates and palaeoenvironments. Our investigations show that Mpondoland’s coastline is a crucial region to study resource access of ancient hunter-gatherers who occupied the nearby coastline, narrow continental shelf, and inland areas.
