Abstract
The ATM method is emerging to be the most effective solution for multimedia communication due to its capability of handling bursty data. Optically transparent photonic ATM switch is important to not only save a lot of O/E and E/O conversion but also keep the cell in the optical domain to fully utilize the THz data-pass bandwidth of photonics and avoid the electronic bottleneck. Photonics techniques also have the advantage of operational bit-rate independency and of having an extra multiplexing dimension (wavelength) to reduce the wire complexity of O(N2) in a switch to O(N). A combination of both the ATM and WDM techniques may provide an ultimate version for optical networking with almost unlimited capacity.
