Abstract
This part presents four chapters on the concept of working memory. The first chapter argues that while the neural activity in both the prefrontal cortex and the medial temporal lobe (MTL) can signal working memory, the substantially more prominent working memory signals seen in the prefrontal cortex suggests that this area ultimately makes a much stronger contribution to general working memory functions than the MTL. The second focuses on a multicomponent model of working memory. The third identifies some key features of working memory. The fourth chapter presents a synthesis of the chapters in this part.
